Davenport, Iowa

The deceased victim has been identified as Mark Fick, 73. The woman (wife) is still hospitalized in stable condition, as of June 17, 2026. The four-year-old child rescued from the home has been released from the hospital. The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental due to improper disposal of smoking material.  A news release from the Davenport Fire Department said firefighters were called to the 3800 block of Johnson Avenue on June 3 at about 12:48 a.m. The 911 caller reported that the home was occupied by two adults, one child, and two dogs.

The first two Davenport Fire Department crews arrived at 12:56 a.m. One crew entered the home through the front door to search for victims while the other crew extended hose lines to the rear of the home to begin attacking the fire. Firefighters quickly located and rescued the child. The woman and the child were taken by ambulance to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire crews knocked down the fire within 15 minutes. A man and the two dogs were found dead. Fire crews remained on scene for several hours to ensure the fire was out and began investigating its cause.

Mark A. Fick, 73, of Davenport, died Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at his home, with his beloved dogs, Duke and Gracie. Funeral services to celebrate Mark’s life are still pending and will be held at a later date.

Mark Anthony Fick was born on July 3, 1952, in Iowa, a son of Richard H. and Rachel (Almendinger) Fick. He was a graduate of Davenport West High School, graduating in 1970. He was united in marriage to Dorothy “Dee” Glenn in December in 1976. They shared over 50 years together. He was employed at John Deere as a quality engineer.

They lived in their West Davenport home, where Mark and Dee built an addition, a deck, a beautiful gazebo, and a garage, along with a flourishing garden that would become Mark’s favorite place to watch butterflies and hummingbirds.

Mark lived for his kids and grandkids. He was a wonderful dad, grandpa, and papa. Dee was his best friend, and they created a life and family they had always dreamt about. Mark could be found coaching softball and baseball, at band concerts and competitions, and finding a way to be helpful and supportive in any way he could. He loved deeply and with great intention and was a friend to anyone he knew. He was also a lover of nature, dogs, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, MG cars, and music.

Those left to honor his memory are his loving wife, Dee; daughters, Gretchen Irwin and Amanda (Randy) Cashman; grandchildren, Marcus Cashman, Morgan (Brendan) Knerr, Mackenzie Cashman, and Gabriel Irwin; great-grandson, Lucas Boutelle.
