Neal passed away Wednesday, Oct. 26, after a long struggle with cancer. He lived five months beyond the doctor’s prediction and gauged his care and energy with precision to be able to spend quality time with family and friends. He began nursing home and hospice care in August and was aided by many expert and compassionate caregivers at Clarissa Cook and Good Samaritan.
Neal A. Hallowell was born Oct. 10, 1952, in Davenport, a son of Dwight R. and Loretta M. (Mitchell) Hallowell.
Neal was a graduate of Davenport West High School class of 1970. He was self-employed for most of his life, becoming skilled at car restoration, especially antiques, with a fondness for 1957 Chevys. He loved the freedom of it, having more time to himself and to share with daughter, Shavell who often traveled with him to many states. More recently he has cherished the time he spent with her husband, Mark York, and his beloved grandchildren Brian, Alex, Samantha and Johnathan. He is also survived by Shavell’s mother, Susan Lewis; stepson, Steve Millage; siblings, Tighe (Denise) Hallowell, Lyle (Deborah) Hallowell, Eileen (Peter) Hallowell Grise’ and Lynn (Scott) Hallowell-Nyenhuis.
